Veath, Rhine appointed CSC vice presidents

The appointment of two vice presidents who already are on the professional staff at Chadron State College has been announced by the college’s president. Dr. Janie Park said Dr. Lois Veath will be vice president for academic affairs and Dr. Randy Rhine will be the vice president for enrollment management and student services.
Veath has served as interim vice president of academic and student affairs at Chadron State since the position became vacant in July 2005. Rhine has been special assistant to the president for enrollment management at CSC since December 2005. National searches were conducted the past few months to fill the positions permanently.
Park said she is confident Veath and Rhine will be excellent members of the executive team.
Veath began her association with Chadron State in 1980. Initially, she was a graduate assistant and adjunct professor. In 1983, she joined the college’s Science Department faculty on a full-time basis. She served as the department chair and was interim dean and dean of the School of Arts and Sciences from 2002-05 before being appointed interim vice president last summer.
Veath earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of California at Riverside, her master’s degree from Chadron State and her doctorate in curriculum and instruction of physics education from the University of Wyoming.
She and her husband David have three adult children. Jisella is an attorney in Omaha, Logan is a captain in the Army and is completing a captain’s career course at Ft. Benning, Ga., and will soon be stationed with the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii, and Blake is a captain in the Marine Corps and is in the first year of a two-year course in space systems operations at the Naval Host Graduate School at Monterey, Calif.
Rhine earned all three of his degrees from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He was a member of that institution’s Division of Continuing Education for 12 years, serving approximately four years each as director of conferences, assistant dean and associate dean.
In 1996, he became dean of the College of Professional Studies and Lifelong Learning at Montana State University-Billings. He was in that position nine years before coming to Chadron State late last year.
Rhine and his wife Ann have two children. Rachael is attending Sophia University in Tokyo and John is employed at the Yellowstone Club, a resort near Bozeman, Mont.
In his new position, Rhine will lead the way in building the college’s enrollment and also will assume the responsibilities involving student activities that were formerly a part of the position Veath has been filling.
Park said she believes the college will benefit by allowing one vice president to concentrate solely on academic programming, curriculum development and assessment and another to engage in student matters, enrollment and retention. She noted that she had both responsibilities during her first three years as provost at MSU-Billings and found them to be extremely challenging.
