Two interviews set for VP position

Published:

Two candidates for the vice president for academic affairs position at Chadron State College will be interviewed during the first week of May.

One of the candidates is Dr. Lois Veath, who has filled the position in an interim capacity since it became vacant in July 2005. The other is Dr. Larry Harris, who is dean of the College of Education at Idaho State University at Pocatello. Veath’s interview will be Tuesday, May 2, and Harris is scheduled for Wednesday, May 3.

Each candidate has an extensive background in higher education.

Prior to being appointed interim vice president, Veath was dean of Chadron State’s School of Arts and Sciences for three years. She was a professor in the CSC’s science department from 1983-2002. In the latter capacity, she headed the Sciences/Mathematics Learning Center, directed the planetarium and was department chairwoman.

Veath earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from University of California-Riverside, a master’s degree in science and math from Chadron State and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Wyoming.

Harris has been dean at Idaho State since 1997. Prior to that, he was dean of the School of Education and director of graduate studies at the University of Arkansas at Monticello for four years. Previously, he was a professor and head of the education division at Nebraska State College System member Wayne State from 1987-1993. He also served two years as an assistant education professor at Mount Marty College at Yankton, S.D.

Harris holds a bachelor’s degree in English and education from Friends University of Kansas, a master’s degree in reading and education from Wichita State University and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Kansas State University.

Chadron State also is searching for a vice president of enrollment management and student services, a position that was created earlier this year to help meet the needs of those two areas while allowing the vice president of academic affairs to concentrate on the demands of academic program, curriculum and assessment issues.
