More than a dozen students who serve in Chadron State College’s tutoring and Supplemental Instruction programs were given special recognition Tuesday during an event at the Kline Center.

Frances Gonzalez, director of the tutoring center, announced that seven CSC tutors recently received certification from the College Reading and Learning Association. They are Sharon Banister, Kiowa, Colo.; Michelle Schultz, Grand Island; Kylee Stanley, Alliance; Sandy Strong, Mitchell; Adam Wells, St. Paul; Becky Whipple, Newcastle, Wyo.; and Miki Wilshusen, Yuma, Colo.

To become certified, students complete 10 hours of training and 25 hours of tutoring. To become a tutor at Chadron State, a student must earn A’s or B’s in their coursework and receive a recommendation from a faculty member.

The SI leaders are students who have been successful in historically challenging courses and are hired to assist the courses’ current students. The SI leaders attend classes with the current students and host a series of review sessions for them each week.

Gonzalez declared Tuesday as Kyle Bottorff Day. Botorff, who previously earned a bachelor’s degree from Chadron State and will be awarded a master’s degree Saturday, has worked eight semesters in the center, either as a tutor or SI leader. He is from Ponca.

Gonzalez honored other students who are leaving the program. The certified tutors and SI leaders who are graduating from Chadron State will be recognized during Ivy Day ceremonies Friday night.

The tutors to be honored are Wells; Janette Davidson, Imperial; Carla Giger, Alliance; Roxann Gilbert, Wheatland, Wyo.; Phil Lockwood, Chadron; Andrea Mullock, Torrington, Wyo.; Kaila Osmotherly, Torrington, Wyo.; Kallie Seier, Pierce; David Voltmer, Torrington; Loren “Scotty” Wescott, Hay Springs. The SI leaders are Giger and Sarah Halsey, Wheatland, Wyo.
