Commencement at Chadron State College last Friday night had a couple of firsts. One was the presentation of the colors by the War Eagle Company, the ROTC Unit at Chadron State, and another was the marriage proposal made by graduate Michael Schumacher of Sidney to his long-time sweetheart, Lauren Hiers, at the end of the exercises.

The commencement may or may not have been the last in which Larry Teahon of Chadron gives the greeting on behalf of the Nebraska State College System. Teahon is at the end of his six-year term on the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State Colleges. Officially, his term will expire Dec. 31.

Members of the Board of Trustees are appointed by the governor. Teahon said he has notified Gov. Heineman that he would be willing to serve another term.

“I’d like to stay on the board and help with the renovation and expansion of the Armstrong Gymnasium,” Teahon said. “I imagine that project will take about six years to complete.”

The project, which is expected to cost about $13 million, is one of four at the head of the capital improvement list that the State Colleges will present to the Legislature during the session that begins in January.

Teahon was the Chadron city manager when he was appointed to the Board of Trustees. He resigned from that position two years ago and is now manager of environmental, health and safety for Crow Butte Resources, the uranium mine southeast of Crawford.

The term of Richard Halbert of Falls City on the Board of Trustees is also expiring this year.

During his remarks to the graduates, Teahon commended them on their accomplishment. He said the college has provided them with a strong foundation that they must continue to build on.

“Use your fresh ideas and desire to learn to make a positive impact,” Teahon said. “Create jobs, get the economy going, find a cure for cancer, write a hit song, inspire us all. Be an asset to the community to the community where you work and live,” he said.

“You’ve worked hard to get here today. That success has prepared you for many more successes during your lifetime.”
