The Chadron State College Child Development Center’s Summer Camp program is teaching children ages 2 to 6 about a number of seasonal topics, including the “great outdoors,” camping, picnics, flags and patriotism, animals and the zoo, the “wonderful world of water” and readings from favorite children’s books.

Dr. Kim Madsen, the center’s director, said the program is giving children an opportunity to “discover first-hand about the world they live in” in a fun way.

Children who are enrolled in the program, and their family members, are taking weekly field trips, including excursions to the Riverside Zoo in Scottsbluff, the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, S.D., Fort Robinson State Park and the Museum of the Fur Trade.

The Child Development Center, located in room 212 of the Burkhiser Technology Complex, is licensed by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. It is open to all families with children between ages 2 and 9, regardless of a child’s ability level. People who want to know more about the CDC, or its Summer Camp program, may call (308) 432-6379 or visit the center.

The Summer Camp, which runs Monday through Friday, has two sessions, one in each June and July. The application process for the fall term at CDC began this week, but enrollment to the center is ongoing and accepted year around. Programs are available for preschool, before and after school, and days out of school. Enrollment numbers are limited with financial support opportunities available.
