Student newspaper wins state awards
The Chadron State College student newspaper, The Eagle, won six awards at the Nebraska Press Association’s annual convention during the weekend of April 22.
Daniel Binkard of Ponca won first place in sports photography for a steer wrestling photo during the Chadron State College Rodeo. Aaron Beyer of Sidney was awarded first place for a cartoon he created about the college’s resident advisor appreciation week.
The Eagle also claimed three second place awards. One was an Eagle editorial, credited to the staff, which noted a limited opportunity for student participation in the candidate visits for the college's presidential search last summer. Other runners-up for CSC were Sierra Lamb of Nisland, S.D., for a feature story about students who traveled south to help Hurricane Katrina victims and Heather Beebout of North Platte, a Whitman native, for a news photo taken during the college’s annual walk honoring Martin Luther King Jr.
Rounding out the awards was Sally Roberts of Chadron who was third for an advertising design.
The Eagle’s adviser, LaVida Dickinson, accompanied three students on the trip to Lincoln.
Dickinson said one of the conference's highlights was the new Tom Allan Memorial Writing Competition for college students. Two CSC students participated in the "live" competition, in which participants were given four hours to research and write a story about Lincoln’s economy, without the use of telephone, Internet or vehicle. The competition is named in honor of the late roving reporter for the Omaha World-Herald.
