Chadron State College graduate Don Sherrill, an opera star for more than 20 years, has arranged for the show that he’s performing in to be presented in Memorial Hall at Chadron State College in late February. The production of “3 Redneck Tenors—a New Musical Adventure,” will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27.

The show is billed as having “down home fun with big city music.” It’s the story of three cousins—Billy Ray, Billy Bob and Billy Joe—who begin their singing careers in Paris (Paris, Texas, that is), and go all the way to New York’s Carnegie Hall.

A portion of the press release about the production says it’s basically “a foot stompin’, knee slappin’ uproariously funny musical redneck romp with the tunes from Elvis to Puccini and Country to Opera.”

Like Sherrill, the other lead performers have plenty of opera and musical theater experience. They include baritone Keith Buterbaugh, tenors Matthew Lord and Steve Sanders and bass Dinny McGuire.

The show has played in 25 cities across the country. Sherrill made arrangements to bring the production to Chadron State between dates in Florissant, Mo., and Cedartown, Ga. Tickets for the show are often $50 each, but for the performance in Chadron they will be $20 for adults and $10 for CSC students and youths 18 and younger.

Sherrill is a 1981 graduate of Chadron State. While attending CSC, he had leads in “Man of LaMancha,” “Irene” and “Fiddler on the Roof.” He also spent two summers as an actor and singer at the Post Playhouse at Fort Robinson and three summers at the Black Hills Playhouse at Custer State Park.

While Sherrill was in college, the late Dr. Alfred Blinde, long-time vocal music director at Chadron State, said Sherrill had one of the best voices he had ever heard.

Within 10 years after graduating, Sherrill had performed in 24 countries and sung in nearly all of America’s leading opera halls.

Tickets may be reserved by contacting the Memorial Hall Box Office at 432-6360. It is open from 2 to 5 p.m. each weekday.
