Rapid City man wins chess tourney
A Rapid City man, Terry Likens, won his seventh championship at the Chadron State College Chess Tournament on Saturday. It was his fifth victory at the tournament in the past six years. The exception was last year, when he did not enter.
Placing second this year was Stephenson Cary, a Chadron State student from Florence, Colo. His father, Steve, was third while a younger brother, Matt, was sixth. Another brother, Chad, also played, but did not place.
Steve Cary is the brother of Phil Cary, a Chadron State math professor.
Placing fourth was Daniel Fiester, a youth minister at the Chadron Berean Church, while fifth went to Jim Collins of Rapid City.
Collins’ wife, Laura, also played in the tournament even though she is blind. For her, the “touch-move” rule was suspended. The rule requires that a player must move the piece he or she touches unless it is announced that they are simply adjusting the position of the piece in the square.
Nineteen players entered the tourney, the director, Dr. Ron Miller, said. Last year’s winner, CSC senior Heath Draney of Omaha, played on Saturday, but did not place.
