New math professor hired

A new assistant professor of mathematics has been hired at Chadron State College. He is Steven Haataja, who is completing work on his doctorate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln this summer. He replaces Dr. Tim Hardy, who was at Chadron State this past year, but is moving to Wayne State.

Haataja lived the first 10 years of his life in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. His family then moved to Spearfish, S.D., where he graduated from Black Hills State University in 1985. While he majored in mathematics, he also earned minors in political science, psychology and theatre, and graduated Summa Cum Laude.

Haataja earned a master’s degree from UNL in 1987 and was a graduate teaching assistant there until 1991. During the next two years, he taught math at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D.

He spent the next 6 ½ years working in technical support and training for a Sioux Falls computer firm. He has been working on his doctorate and serving as a teaching assistant at UNL since 2000.

His teaching assignments at UNL have included contemporary mathematics, intermediate algebra, trigonometry and honors courses in calculus.
