Koza writes about SIFE for textbook

The importance of student organizations to a college, the community and the students who participate in them is outlined by a Chadron State College business professor in a new college textbook.

Dr. Rick Koza drew on his experiences as sponsor of the award-winning Students In Free Enterprise chapter at CSC for one of five appendixes in “Entrepreneurial Small Business” that was recently published by McGraw Hill Irwin.

Co-authors of the book are Jerome Kautz of St. Louis University and Richard Green of the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas.

The authors mention the value of student organizations in the textbook and refer its users to Koza’s appendix for additional information. He gives a step-by-step approach to developing a SIFE chapter, how to obtain community involvement and ways to incorporate projects in the curriculum.

Details on several SIFE projects and a copy of the CSC chapter’s annual report are included.

The CSC chapter has been among the top 10 in the final national rankings three of the past four years and was one of just three to place in all five of the special competitions at last year’s National Exposition in Kansas City.

Earlier in 2005, the Chadron State SIFE team received its second consecutive Nebraska First Lady Award for volunteer service.

This past January, the CSC group won first place in regional competition in Denver that involved preparing a family’s financial plan and presenting the plan to an 11-judge panel. The $2,500 that the chapter received will be used to participate in the national competition in Tucson. Ariz., on March 2-6.
