John Harms to speak at Chadron State commencement
Members of the team were Craig Eddie of Ogallala, Kimmy Mott of Fullerton, Dan Ruterbories of Ord and Jenny Walker of Edgemont, S.D. Their mentor is Dr. Chuck Butterfield, associate professor of agriculture at CSC. Besides winning the large trophy, the CSC team received $500 to help pay its way to the international competition in Reno, Nev., in February. The competition is open to all colleges and universities. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Chadron State. Last spring he retired as president of Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff after filling that position 30 years.
Harms will begin new responsibilities in the Nebraska Legislature in January after being elected the senator from the 48th District last month.
The graduates will include 36 who completed work on their degrees this past summer and have been invited to return for commencement. Larry Teahon of Chadron, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State Colleges, will extend greetings at the opening of the program.
After receiving his master’s degree from Chadron State in 1966, Harms remained on campus two years as director of housing and financial aid. He then was dean of students for two years and dean of instruction four years at Northeast Community College at Norfolk.
Harms was president of McCook Community College from 1973 through 1976, when he became president of what was then known as Nebraska Western College. The institution changed its name to Western Nebraska Community College in 1988.
Throughout his career, Dr. Harms has been a leader in many state and national organizations and frequently has been recognized for his leadership and service.
The new state-of-the-art Advanced Technology Center that opened this year on the WNCC campus is named in his honor.
