Jazz Festival at CSC on March 20

Musicians from 15 high schools in the tri-state region will be participating in the High Plains Jazz Festival at Chadron State College on Monday, March 20. Both vocal and instrumental groups will be involved. The vocal competition will begin at 7:45 a.m. in the Student Center and involve both swing choirs and jazz choirs.

Swing choirs competing in Class A are Alliance and two groups from Scottsbluff. Two groups from Bayard are in Class B. The entries in Class C are Hershey and Valentine from Nebraska and Niobrara County High and Sundance from Wyoming.

Among the jazz choirs, two groups from Rapid City Central and one from Sturgis are entered in Class A; Bayard and Chadron are entered in Class B; and three Wyoming schools—Guernsey-Sunrise, Niobrara County and Sundance—make up the Class C field.

The instrumental competition will start at 8:45 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

The Class A entries are Gering and Sidney. Mitchell is the only Class B entry, but the Class C field includes Gordon-Rushville, Hershey, Niobrara County and Sundance.

Adam Lambert, who became the director of bands at Chadron State last fall, will be the instrumental clinician. The vocal clinicians are Steve Parker, the choral director at Black Hills State University at Spearfish, S.D., and Anne Berven, choral director at St. John’s College at Santa Fe, N.M.

The Chadron State instrumental jazz ensemble directed by Dr. Sandy Schaefer will give a concert at 11 a.m. in Memorial Hall and the vocal jazz ensemble directed by Dr. Joel Schreuder will give a concert at 1 p.m. in the Student Center. Both concerts will be open to the public without charge.

An improvisational clinic for instrumentalists is set for 4:15 p.m. The awards ceremony will be at 5:30 in Memorial Hall.
