Former CSC staffer honored
A former Chadron State College staff member has received a special honor. Dr. Tom Henry, chancellor of the Mohave Community College based at Kingman, Ariz., has been Community College Chief Executive Officer of the Year for the Pacific Region by the Association of Community College Trustees.
Henry will receive the award at the ACCT’s annual meeting in Orlando, Fla., on Oct. 12. As the Pacific Region winner, he is one of five finalists for the Marie Y. Martin Award as National Community College CEO of the Year.
Henry, who grew up in Newcastle, Wyo., was director of student assistance at Chadron State from 1971 through 1976. After leaving CSC, he earned a doctorate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and served as assistant to the vice president and assistant to the president at UNL until becoming academic vice president at Seminole Junior College in Oklahoma in 1983.
Henry moved to the Mohave Community College District four years ago. It has
about 15,000 students with campuses in four locations in Arizona.
Since Henry’s arrival, the district has experienced a 25 percent increase in full-time student equivalency, a 642 percent increase in financial aid disbursements, a 183 percent increase in distance education enrollment and a 96 percent growth in continuing education clients.
The college also has implemented 16 new programs.
Dan Hargrove, president of the MCC Board of Governors, said Henry has given the college its strongest leadership in the 25 years he has served on the board.
“He deserves to be recognized because he is a model for other college and university CEOs across the country,” Hargrove was quoted as saying.
