A chapter written by Dr. George Griffith, professor of English at Chadron State College, is included in a book that was recently printed by the University of Iowa Press.

The book is titled “Kindred Hands: Letter Writing by British and American Women Authors, 1986-1935.”

Griffith’s chapter is on Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, a 19th century American writer who corresponded with the English novelist Mary Anne Evans, who used the pen name George Eliot.

Griffith discusses the relationship between the writers and provides transcriptions of original letters that he studied at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University about 10 years ago.

The chapter is the latest in a series of published articles and book chapters that Griffith has written on George Eliot and the author’s ties with America. The CSC professor has been involved in the project for more than a decade.

Eliot is best known in America for the book, “Silas Marner.” Griffith said during the 19th century Eliot and Charles Dickens were the most widely-read English authors.
