A professor of family and consumer sciences at Chadron State College, Dr. Norma Nealeigh, recently received the Outstanding Service Award from the Nebraska Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Association at its conference in Kearney. Dr. Margaret Crouse, interim dean of the School of Professional and Graduate Studies at Chadron State, said Nealeigh has a strong interest in “service learning” and has incorporated several service-oriented projects into the family and consumer sciences curriculum

“Students leave her courses with a much better understanding of their leadership roles within a community,” Crouse stated.

Nealeigh, who has taught at Chadron State since 1994, grew up in western Nebraska and earned a degree in home economics education from Kearney State College. She taught in Nebraska high schools 1971-83 and served on the Future Homemakers Association’s national board of directors 1981-83.

In 1978, Nealeigh received the Outstanding Teacher Award from the FCS division of the Nebraska Association for Career and Technical Education and was that organization’s president in 1982-83.

Nealeigh earned a master’s degree in vocational education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a doctorate in housing from Oklahoma State University. She worked at OSU as the student academic services director for the College of Human Environmental Sciences for four years.

While at CSC, Nealeigh has been president of the Faculty Senate and is the chair of the Department of Applied Sciences that includes family and consumer sciences, range management and industrial technology.

“She is a strong leader and is able to focus the faculty toward common tasks and accomplishments,” Crouse said.
