Dr. Jim Margetts, assistant professor of piano at Chadron State College, will be joined by Todd Queen, a friend from his college days, for a performance at the Chicoine Atrium of the Sandoz Center next week. “The Evolution of American Musical Theater” will be Monday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m.

Through Queen’s singing and Margetts’ piano, the two plan to explore the evolution of American musical theater “from its origins in European operetta, to its fusion of jazz and opera, and finally to the popularization of the genre with familiar rock music and pop culture icons.”

The recital is open to the public free of charge.

Both Margetts and Queen obtained their undergraduate degrees from Brigham Young University at Provo, Utah. Since then, they have combined for a number of performances including one at Puebla, Mexico, a few years ago. Following the recital at Chadron State, they will travel to Vermillion, S.D., to perform at the University of South Dakota.

Queen, who lives in Fort Collins, Colo., is a tenor who performs regularly as a soloist with national and regional opera companies, orchestras, choruses and concert series. He has performed with more than two dozen operas and orchestras at points throughout the western United States. He is the associate professor of voice and director of opera at Colorado State University.

Margetts teaches courses in applied piano, piano studio operations and music literature at CSC. In addition to teaching, he has appeared as both soloist and collaborative artist at venues across the United States.
