A clarinet quartet from Chadron State College will be performing at the North Central Music Educators National Conference/ Nebraska Music Educators Association Conference in Lincoln this weekend.

The quartet members are Shannon Yetter of Sutherland, Nicole Penning of Rapid City, Katie Ringleman of Imperial and Amanda Morris of Lincoln. The quartet’s director is Carola K. Winkle, who teaches woodwinds and music education at Chadron State.

Also performing in Lincoln will be percussionist Nathan Beutler, a Chadron High School graduate and senior majoring in music education at CSC. He will represent the college during the Collegiate Showcase Recital at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

The quartet auditioned last spring and was notified of its acceptance in late summer. Numerous hours of practice have followed.

The quartet will perform at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17 in the Johnny Carson Theatre. Its selections will include a classical number, “Rondo,” by Michel Yost; a work by Ignaz Lachner representing the romantic period; and a movement entitled “Pescatorini,” or “Little Fishermen,” from Yvonne Desportes’ contemporary work, “Suite Italienne.” The quartet will conclude its presentation with a number written by New York composer David Uber in 1994 for another CSC clarinet quartet after it was selected to perform for Nebraska Music Educators Conference. The number is entitled “Four Fables for Four Woodwinds, Opus 333.”

This year’s conference is a 10-state event that includes Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

The CSC quartet will share the concert hour with the Heartland Community Flute Choir from University of Nebraska-Omaha and the chamber choir from Ball State University in Indiana.

Beutler is a student of Dr. Sandy Schaefer, associate professor of music at CSC, and will be accompanied on the piano by Jim Margetts, another CSC music faculty member. He will play the third movement of Ney Rosauro’s “Concerto for Vibraphone and Orchestra.”

Each college and university in Nebraska is allotted one representative at the recital. Beutler was selected following three auditions.

The recital where he will perform will be part of the annual meeting of the Nebraska chapters of Music Educators National Conference. The program will open with a keynote address by Lynn Brinckmeyer, national MENC president. She is assistant professor of music and director of choral music education at Texas State University at San Marcos.

In addition to the quartet members and Beutler, several other CSC students who belong to the college’s MENC chapter will participate in the conference. The CSC chapter, which Winkle sponsors, has about 20 members and was selected the Outstanding Collegiate Chapter in Nebraska in 2004. This year’s officers are Brittany Weglin of Yoder, Wyo., president; Shana Gulbranson of Chadron, vice-president; Stephanie Aulston of Julesburg, Colo., secretary/treasurer; and Ringleman, Campus Activities Board representative.

One of the highlights of the state convention will occur Friday evening when Dr. William Winkle, the director of bands at Chadron State College for 34 years before he retired in 2005, will be inducted into the Nebraska Music Educators Hall of Fame.
