CSC jazz concert is Friday night

Published:

The fall concert by three jazz groups at Chadron State College will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1 in Memorial Hall.

The vocal jazz ensemble directed by Dr. Joel Schreuder will open the program. The selections will include "I Want You Back," made famous by Michael Jackson; "Reubin's Blues," based on an old children's song; and several other compositions written specifically for vocal jazz groups.

The instrumental jazz ensemble directed by Dr. Sandy Schaefer will perform arrangements of the standards "Just One of Those Things," "Let It Snow,” "Lil' Darlin'" and "The Shadow of Your Smile."

The popular Jazz Birds will round out the program with their jazz and rhythm and blues Christmas arrangements. Schaefer said both of the groups he directs have several new members, mostly freshmen, this year.

Schaefer added that Rana Tucker is the Jazz Birds’ featured vocalist, continuing the tradition of excellence set by her predecessors such as Karin Keller, Kelly Bitner, Mandy Carlson and Jolana Milburn.

In addition, one of the freshmen, Jamal Zeno, will be the vocal soloist for the jazz ensemble's version of "The Shadow of Your Smile." Zeno also plays the trombone for the ensemble.

Tickets may be obtained in advance from the Memorial Hall box office, which is open from 2 to 5 p.m. each weekday. They are $5 for adults and $3 for students 18 and under. There is no charge for CSC personnel if the tickets are obtained in advance. All tickets at the door are $6.
