A news anchor for CNN, Betty Nguyen (pronounced Win), will be the first speaker of the fall semester in the Distinguished Speaker Series at Chadron State College. Her presentation will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30 in the Student Center. Her topic will be “Diversity: Don’t Hide From It, Celebrate It.”

The talk will be open to the public without charge.

A co-host of CNN’s Saturday and Sunday Morning shows, Nguyen is expected to share stories of how diversity has enriched the media and everyday lives. Nguyen joined CNN in April 2004 and is based in the network’s headquarters in Atlanta.

Highlights of her career include being in the anchor position for CNN’s award-winning coverage of Hurricane Katrina and the tsunami disaster in South Asia. Additionally, she contributed to the network’s coverage of the death of Pope John Paul II, the London bombings and the Iraqi elections.

Before joining CNN, Nguyen was an anchor for KTVT in Dallas and a freelance correspondent for E! Entertainment Television. While conducting several humanitarian aid trips to Vietnam, where she was born, she provided extensive coverage of the deadly flooding along the Mekong Delta.

At KTVT, she covered the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003 and earned a regional Emmy award for “outstanding noon newscast.”

She is a co-founder of Help the Hungry, an organization that strives to alleviate global hunger and provide relief to needy families around the world. These efforts have earned her a spot in the Philanthropy in Texas Hall of Fame.

Nguyen graduated magna cum laude from the University of Texas with a degree in broadcast journalism.
