Classical guitarist Robert Bluestone, who specializes in music that spans “four continents and four centuries,” will entertain an audience at Chadron State College’s Student Center on Wednesday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. Before that, however, he plans to take his talent to a number of Chadron residents who otherwise might not have the luxury of seeing it.

Bluestone, who often plays for children, seniors and the ill, will make five appearances that are free and open to the public at Chadron’s Prairie Pines Retirement Lodge during the days leading up to his performance at CSC. He’s especially encouraging attendance by those who are facing unique challenges, such as caretakers for cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, hospice workers, and people who are grieving about a lost loved one. The Prairie Pines performances will be Monday, March 20, at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.; Tuesday, March 21 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Wednesday, March 22 at 10 a.m.

Loree MacNeill, CSC director of cultural programs, said Bluestone builds an instant rapport with audiences by using charm, wit and humor, and by providing commentary about the music, its composers and historical context. She said he has been popular during previous appearances sponsored by Chadron State.

Bluestone, whose recordings include “Recital,” “Alchemy” and “Convergence,” tours regularly throughout the United States, Mexico, Australia, Canada and Central America.

Bluestone received a master’s degree in music from Eastern Michigan University before studying with eminent Argentine guitarist Manuel Lopez Ramos at the Instituto del Arte Guitarristico at Mexico City. He later became the first foreign virtuoso to join the institution’s staff.

From 1991-1996, the guitarist was the most requested solo artist on the Western States Arts Federation’s Performing Arts Tour roster. He has received the mayor of Santa Fe’s Outstanding Achievement in the Arts award for his leading role in the cultural life of his home city and state.

Bluestone lives in Santa Fe, N.M., with his wife, Rebecca, an accomplished tapestry weaver who was a juror during the 2005 CSC Juried Art Exhibit.

Bluestone’s performance is part of Chadron State’s Galaxy Series of fine arts events. Reserved tickets for Wednesday night’s show are $10 for adults, $6 for children and seniors, and free for Chadron State College students and employees. All tickets at the door will be $11.

Tickets may be reserved by calling the Memorial Hall Box Office at (308) 432-6360 from 2-6 p.m. Monday-Friday. During other times, people may leave a message with their phone number on the box office answering machine. Calls will be returned as soon as possible.
