Chadron State receives funds from estate
The Chadron State Foundation has received $161,556 from the family of Claude H. Lefler, a native of the Gordon area. Proceeds from the gift will be used for scholarships, according to Connie Rasmussen, executive director of the foundation.
Lefler was born in Sheridan County in 1891. He and his wife Lula initially lived in Missouri and later in eastern Nebraska, where they farmed. They had 10 children, two of whom died in infancy.
After Lula died in 1968, Claude married Faith Webster, an acquaintance from their teen-age years, and moved to Gordon. He died in 1983.
The youngest of Claude’s children, Betty McAdam of Ovid, Colo., said she and her surviving siblings have been sharing the income from the estate, but recently decided to turn the funds over to the Chadron State Foundation to help provide scholarships.
Claude and Lula’s other surviving children are Jack Lefler of Ceresco, Neb., Clyde Lefler of Grass Valley, Calif., and Claude Lefler of Bartlesville, Okla. A daughter-in-law, Lois Lefler, lives in Florida.
