Chadron State criminal justice students in London

A 29-member group from Chadron State College is participating in the 30th annual Comparative Criminal Justice trip to London. The trip began Monday, May 8 and will conclude Wednesday, May 24.

The trip is being led by Dr. George Watson and Dr. Tracy Nobiling, professors of justice studies at CSC. They are accompanied by 27 Chadron State students. A group from the University of Nebraska at Omaha is also on the trip.

A couple of the highlights are scheduled to occur early this coming week. Most of the group will visit No. 10 Downing Street, the home of Great Britain’s Prime Minister Tony Blair and his family, on Sunday.

While Chadron State groups have visited the prime minister’s home in the past, it is not an annual occurrence, according to Watson. He said this year the CSC entourage will be given the tour as the guest of Lt. Miller, a law enforcement office who is among those in charge of security at the residence.

A few years ago, several members of the CSC group caught a glimpse of Blair as he read the newspaper in a garden area.

On Monday, the same officer will give a tour to several students who are considering careers in forensics of the Metropolitan Police Department’s crime laboratory. Watson said this will be the first time CSC students have visited the lab.

Later in the day, the entire group will visit the Empress State Building in a new portion of Scotland Yard to discuss police diversity and training in England and Wales with Chief Inspector Kevin Bowsher. This will be another first, Watson said.

Watson said Bowsher introduced himself to last year’s group and indicated a willingness to help with this year’s tour. Since then, he has been promoted to chief inspector and received an Order of the British Empire medal from Queen Elizabeth. He recently contacted Watson and Nobiling and arranged to meet the CSC group and discuss his specialty.

Other highlights of the trip were to include visits of the Metropolitan Police Training Academy; Oxford University; Stratford –Upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare; Warwick Castle, which dates back to the 11th century; Old Bailey crown courts, where some of England’s relatively few murder trials take place; and Holloway Prison.

Trips to Paris and Scotland also were available to group participants.
