Bug Brigade off and rolling at CSC
Chadron State College has gotten the parade bug this year, literally. The Bug Brigade, which refers to the group of people who walk alongside Chadron State’s customized 1972 Volkswagen Beetle during parades throughout the region, got the summer off to a good start by participating in the Camp Clarke Days parade at Bridgeport on Saturday, June 3.
The Bug Brigade, about a dozen strong, was awarded first place in the “other” category, edging out a tractor for a prize.
“We weren’t expecting to win anything, but it was a nice way to get this thing started,” said Loree MacNeill, CSC director of college relations. “We donated the cash prize back to the parade.”
The size of the Bug Brigade membership relies on the response of people within each parade’s region. Prior to each parade, invitations are being sent to nearby Chadron State College students and alumni. While membership is unlimited, the first 25 to sign up for each parade get a free Bug Brigade t-shirt.
“We’ve had the bug for a few years now, and we decided to do something a little different with it this year,” MacNeill said. “We’re expecting this to be a fun community building event for Chadron State alumni, students and anyone else who considers themselves an Eagles fan.”
The next scheduled parade for the Bug Brigade is North Platte’s Nebraskaland Days, June 17. Other scheduled Bug Brigade appearances in the near future are Alliance’s Heritage Days, Chadron’s Fur Trade Days and Crawford’s Fourth of July parade.
