Art displays opening in Memorial Hall
Works by two art professors at universities in the western United States will go on display Wednesday, Feb. 1 in Memorial Hall at Chadron State College.
The works of Eileen Doktorski of Utah State University will be displayed in the Main Gallery while the works of Jacklyn St. Aubyn of New Mexico State University will be exhibited in Gallery 239. Both shows will be open through Feb. 24.
Doktorski will be the guest of honor at a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday in the lobby of Memorial Hall. She is a sculptor and arrived on campus Monday to set up her show and to discuss and demonstrate her work with CSC students.
She said that through her sculpture and installations she examines moments in human relationships when emotional conflict surfaces. She said her goal is to help the audience discover ways her work is relevant to their individual lives and experiences.
She added that materials such as wax, fabric, plaster and wood allow her to create sculptures with an organic quality and sense of life.
“I am equally interested in capturing a true record of human presence through direct casting and manipulating materials for greater expression,” the artist said.
A native of New Jersey, Doktorski earned her master of fine arts degree in sculpture from Yale University. Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries along the east coast as well as in Utah and Washington state, but never before in Nebraska.
St. Aubyn said her works consist of paintings constructed of wood with an inset niche. The central panel is set a half inch inside the outer area. The paintings are colorful, decorative and contain a symbolic narrative. A majority of the paintings contain flowers, fruits and birds.
Her works have been exhibited in eight states during the past two years.
