American Sports History course in July at CSC

Published:

How and why sports have become an important element in America’s life will be explored during a two-week course at Chadron State College in early July.

The American Sports History course will be taught by Dr. Sam Rankin, president emeritus and Board of Trustees professor of history at Chadron State. The classes will meet Monday through Friday afternoons July 3-14 with the exception of Tuesday, July 4. The course may be taken for either undergraduate or graduate credit.

Rankin said topics such as when and where sports in America first appeared and how sports reflect on American culture and history will be explored.

The course will focus on the major sports of baseball, football and basketball as well as on boxing. The roles of ethnicity, gender and race in the development of American sports also will be probed. Attention also will be placed on the roles of sports in society, in education and as recreation.

Rankin said students also will have the opportunity to explore the legends, heroes and villains on the athletic scene, both past and present.

Those interested in registering for the course should contact the Registrar’s Office at Chadron State at 432-6221.
