It will be a cowboy poet's weekend as more than a dozen performers from seven states will display their talents Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Chadron State College Cowboy Poetry Gathering.

The poets and musicians will each recite their work for 15 minutes at the Chadron State College Student Center beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday. The four sessions of entertainment, which are free and open to the public, will precede the "Cowboy Supper" at 6 p.m. and the performance of renowned poet Baxter Black at 7:30 p.m.

Those scheduled to perform are Rick Buoy of Kearney, Deb Carpenter of Rushville, Ken Cook of Martin, S.D., Dick Haag of Indianola, Yvonne Hollenbeck of Clearfield, S.D., Willard Hollopeter of Wood Lake, Bonnie Krogman of Wood, S.D., Liz Masterson of Denver, Colo., Slim McNaught of New Underwood, S.D., Lyn Messersmith of Alliance, Harold Roy Miller of Stagecoach, Nev., Mike Moutoux of Pinos Altos, N.M., Timothy Nolting of Berthoud, Colo., Jerry Schleicher of Parkville, Mo., and Diane Tribitt of Hillman, Minn.

Loree MacNeill, CSC director of cultural programs and college relations, said the performers will provide a great representation of the Great Plains and that the event is proving to be popular in Chadron's Western setting. MacNeill said Black's appearance is creating more interest than any cultural activity at CSC at least since Ralph Nader spoke in the spring of 2000.

Seating was expanded for Black's performance, which has been sold out for more than a month. It will now be shown by live video in the recital hall in Memorial Hall and the Scottsbluff Room of the Student Center. Tickets for the video showings are $6 for all age groups, and may be obtained by contacting the CSC Box Office at (308) 432-6360 from 2-6 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Those whose names are on the waiting list are being contacted about the special arrangements. Those on the waiting list and who have not been contacted should call the box office to confirm that they will have tickets for the video viewing.

Those with reservations for Black’s performance are asked to arrive early. Tickets that were reserved but not claimed by 7:15 will be released to others, MacNeill said.

The supper is open to the public, but the Department of College Relations is requesting that those who plan to dine on the stew and cornbread call (308) 432-6316 by Thursday in order to make seating preparations. The cost will be $6 at the door.
