12 Chadron State degrees available via Internet

Thanks to the accelerated nature of the “information superhighway,” no longer does distance between home and school keep people from earning a degree at Chadron State College. This fall, all coursework for 12 degree programs will become available from Chadron State in an online format.

“Chadron State always has been among the pioneers of distance education, a reflection of its effort to serve the people of the vast region it serves,” said Dr. Janie Park, CSC president. “With this new initiative, we look forward to serving placebound students at an even higher level of convenience than ever before.”

Six undergraduate and six graduate degrees make up the institution’s online offerings.

Among the new offerings is the Chadron State Business Academy.

The Business Academy will feature all of CSC’s business and economics courses in a convenient eight-week format instead of the traditional 16-week semester.

“In recent years, professors began offering our MBA (master of business administration) courses in eight weeks, and they have been extremely popular,” said Dr. Lois Veath, CSC vice president for academic affairs. “Students really seem to like the focused approach of the instruction. They like the fact that they can get in and get it done.”

A national publication recently named Chadron State the best buy among the nation’s MBAs.

Besides business, CSC’s online degrees are tailored for those seeking careers in psychology, library media, mathematics and education. For a number of years, CSC’s master’s degree in mathematics has been among only a few offered by colleges and universities nationwide.

Chadron State has long placed an emphasis on distance delivery, beginning in the days when professors would sometimes drive 100 miles or more to deliver its courses to surrounding communities. Through technological advances, the courses have become available in more locations and professors spend much less time on the road. To make learning more convenient for western Nebraskans, Chadron State has stationed representatives at learning sites in North Platte, Scottsbluff, Alliance and Sidney.

“Now, we’re to the point that we can offer instruction directly to a person’s home. As technology advances, we’ll continue to create new opportunities for students who are limited by travel,” Park said.

While other institutions have begun offering online educational opportunities in recent years, Park said the affordability of Chadron State, coupled with the institution’s long-standing tradition of quality and name recognition, will be difficult to match. An online credit hour at Chadron State costs only $147 for undergraduate courses and $174 for graduate courses.

She said online learning is an excellent option for people who have commitments near their homes and communities, but encourages others to attend college on Chadron State’s campus in the scenic Pine Ridge region of northwest Nebraska. Chadron State offers more than 50 degree programs for those who attend classes in Chadron.

“While online and other distance education methods retain the high quality standards of traditional classroom instruction, nothing replaces the experiences of attending college in a campus setting,” she said. “The vibrant activity of a college campus provides experiences and extracurricular opportunities that can’t be replaced by other methods.”
