Water quantity is program topic

“Water Quantity Issues in the Panhandle” will be the topic is the first Distinguished Speaker Series presentation of the spring semester at Chadron State College. The program will be at 7 p.m, Tuesday, Feb. 8 in the Student Center. No admission will be charged.

The speaker will be Lyndon Vogt, general manager of the Upper Niobrara-White Natural Resources District based in Chadron. Vogt has filled the position 3 1/2 years. Prior to that, he was the general manager of the Lower Niobrara NRD at Butte.

Vogt noted that water in the Panhandle is a complex issue. It includes heavy irrigation with ground water and/or surface water in parts of the 11-county area and only limited irrigation in other portions of the region such as much of Dawes County where the water is not available.

Vogt said he will briefly discuss the situations in the southern Panhandle and along the North Platte River, but most of his focus will be on the four-county area that makes up the NRD he manages.

Drought this decade has increased the awareness of water issues throughout the state and the nation, Vogt pointed out.
