Three S.D., two Neb. schools win CSC Scholastic Contest trophies

Published:

Three South Dakota schools and two from Nebraska were the champions Friday at the 45th annual Inter-High School Scholastic Contest at Chadron State College. More than 1,800 students from 53 schools were entered in the event.

Rapid City Stevens won Class I for the 17th time in the past 21 years, St. Thomas More of Rapid City captured Class III for the 10th time in the last 11 years and Rapid City Christian won Class IV for the third straight year.

The winners from Nebraska were O’Neill and Sandhills High, which is made up of youths from Halsey and Dunning.

O’Neill took the Class II title for the ninth time in the last 12 years. O’Neill also was the Class III winner eight times before moving to Class II. But the triumph was the first for Sandhills High, which had not participated in the contest since 1996.

A senior from Sandhills, Sarah Rogers, was the only triple medal winner. Medals are awarded to the top three students in each test. She was first in Business Communications and Vocabulary, second in Business Management Decision Making and third in Vocabulary.

Two students from Rapid City schools each won two gold medals. Junior Jacob Boschee of Rapid City Central was first in both Earth Science and Computer Science while freshman Jacque Godbe of Rapid City Stevens won first in General Anatomy and Physiology and Health.

Eighteen more students won two medals apiece. That is an unusually high number of double medal winners, contest observers reported.

Students from South Dakota won or shared first place in 20 of the 49 tests that were administered by Chadron State faculty members.

Students from the four Holt County, Neb., schools entered in the contest also did extra well, winning 26 medals. Entries from Stuart won eight medals, those from both O’Neill and West Holt High at Atkinson won seven and students from Chambers won four medals.

Seniors who win first in a test are awarded a one-year scholarship covering the in-state portion of their tuition. The contest had a new wrinkle this year. Those placing first also will receive a T-shirt which states that they were a winner at the CSC Scholastic Contest.
