Speaker to address water quantity tonight

Published:

The availability of water in the Panhandle will be the topic at the Distinguished Speaker Series presentation tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 8) at 7 p.m. in the Student Center at Chadron State College. No admission will be charged. The speaker will be Lyndon Vogt, general manager of the Upper Niobrara-White Natural Resources District based in Chadron.

Vogt noted that water in the Panhandle is a complex issue. He said there are definitely some concerns such as the fact that White River north of Chadron went dry two years ago for the first time in recorded history and that the water table in parts of Box Butte County has fallen about a foot a year the past 50 years under pressure from heavy irrigation.

Vogt said he will briefly discuss the situations in the southern Panhandle and along the North Platte River, but most of his focus will be on the four-county area that makes up the NRD he manages.
