A new Smithsonian traveling exhibition, “Key Ingredients: America by Food,” will be on display in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center at Chadron State College beginning Friday, Sept. 2. The exhibit will remain open through Oct. 17.

The display delves into the historical, regional and social traditions that merge in everyday meals and celebrations of the American table. In addition, the Sandoz Center has arranged for numerous special events on campus that will take place in conjunction with the exhibition.

Using a variety of artifacts, photographs and illustrations, “Key Ingredients” examines how cultures, ethnicity, landscape and traditions influence the food and flavors that are enjoyed throughout the nation. The exhibition also looks at the evolution of the American kitchen and how food industries have responded to the technological innovations that have enabled Americans to choose an ever-wider variety of frozen, prepared and fresh foods.

The display also addresses the entrepreneurial spirit on which many food production companies are based, such as Heinz, Campbell and Borden.

An interactive website, www.keyingredients.org, has been developed in conjunction with the exhibit. It invites people across the country to share their family recipes and food stories, learn about food traditions and identify favorite small-town eateries.

The exhibit is being is part of the Museum on Main Street partnership the involves the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and the Nebraska Humanities Council. Each year SITES shares the wealth of Smithsonian collections and research materials with millions of people outside the headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The first of the special events in conjunction with the exhibit was a marshmallow roast Tuesday night at the CSC clocktower.
