The Chadron State College Students In Free Enterprise team won the organization’s regional case study competition Thursday through Saturday. The event was at the campus of Metropolitan State University in Denver. Chadron State’s team defeated clubs from Colorado State-Pueblo, Kansas State, University of California Chico, Newman University and Pepperdine University.

The four-member SIFE team from Chadron State consisted of Tamara Spahn and Casey Keim, both of Chadron, Chelsey Bourdeon of Riverton, Wyo., and Melissa Baumann of Morrill.

The competition is part of a national personal finances case study competition for college students. The teams were presented with a hypothetical family with mounting financial debt. Beginning Thursday night, the teams had 36 hours to research and develop an effective budget and recovery plan for them based on their specific situation, including economics, geography, and resources available in the community. The team on Saturday morning gave a four-page written summary and 19-minute formal presentation of their findings to a group of 10 business executives from the Denver area who served as judges.

“This was exciting to see how well prepared our students are and how they can compete against much larger universities,” said Dr. Rick Koza, Chadron State’s SIFE adviser. “This is a tribute to the skills preparation learned at CSC and the dedication of these fine young students. They will be a great addition to the nation’s workforce.”

Kansas State finished second in the competition and Pepperdine was third.

The Denver competition is part of a series of nine regional competitions with the winner and host team eligible to compete at the University of Arizona’s "Dual In the Desert.” The event, which is SIFE’s national finals, will be March 10-13 at Tucson.

The regional case study competition was co-sponsored by the University of Arizona and Take Charge America.
