A Chadron State College senior, Malinda Sprentall, will present a clarinet recital at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27 in the Chicoine Atrium of the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center. The recital is open to the public without charge. Sprentall will be accompanied on the piano by Nicole Smith.

Sprentall, who grew up in Chadron, is majoring in music performance and mathematics. She has been a clarinet student of Carola Winkle since the sixth grade. She also will present a piano recital in April.

The literature for Sunday’s recital will represent all periods of music, opening with the last movement of Johann Stamitz’s “Concerto for Clarinet.”

It will be followed by the first movement of the “Concerto for Clarinet” by Wolfgang Mozart. It was the first major work written for clarinet after the instrument was invented in the 1700s. Mozart wrote it for his friend, Anton Stadler, and it remains significant in the classical literature for clarinet, Winkle said.

In addition, Sprentall will perform three movements from “Sonata No. 2 in E-flat Major” by Johannes Brahms, and “Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, ” a contemporary work of French composer Francis Poulenc.

Also during the recital, Sprentall will be joined by alto Karin Keller, who will sing “Faith in Spring” by Franz Schubert and a Welsh air, “All Through the Night.”

Sprentall is involved in numerous activities at Chadron State. She is treasurer of the Wind Ensemble, a member of the clarinet quartet and a piano accompanist for music presentations. In addition, she belongs to Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honorary and Cardinal Key National Honor Society and is in the honors program.

Malinda is a pianist for United Church of Christ First Congregational in Chadron and is co-chair of the church’s Diaconate Board. She played her clarinet to win the Chadron Kiwanis Club’s Stars of Tomorrow in 2002, when she was a senior at Chadron High School. Her parents, Bob and Gail Sprentall, now live in Douglas, Wyo.
