Phi Theta Kappa students spruce up CSC child centers

Sixty students from nine community colleges in Nebraska and Wyoming helped organize and beautify the Chadron State College Child Development Center and Infant Center at Grace Episcopal Church last month. The students were attending the annual Phi Theta Kappa fall conference at Fort Robinson State Park.

PTK, an international honor society for two-year college students, has both a scholarly and service role.As part of the latter, the group painted, moved sand, washed toys, cleaned flower beds and organized inventory at the Chadron facilities.

Dr. Kim Madsen, CDC director, said she appreciated the students’ efforts immensely.

“It was a great opportunity for us to complete some tasks that we don’t have time to do when our time is used to meet the needs of our students, the children and families,” she said.

Madsen said a representative from one of the community colleges sought advice for establishing a child care center on her campus.

The students represented Metropolitan Community College at Omaha, McCook Community College, North Platte Community College, Casper (Wyo.) College, Sheridan College-Gillette (Wyo.) Campus, Laramie County Community College at Cheyenne, Wyo., and Central Community College campuses at Columbus, Grand Island and Hastings.
