Panel to discuss water at CSC on Monday

Published:

“Water Issues in Western Nebraska” will be the topic of a panel discussion at 7 p.m. Monday, April 18 in the Student Center at Chadron State College. The program will conclude the Distinguished Speakers Series that has focused on water availability in the area during the 2004-05 school year.

The program will be open to the public without cost.

The panel members will include:

--Rex Amack, director of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

--Jordan Ball, a Crawford native and the Sidney city attorney.

--Tom Oliver, a Bridgeport attorney who argued the Spear T Ranch water case from Morrill County before the Nebraska Supreme Court earlier this year.

--Steve Sibray, a ground water geologist stationed at Scottsbluff with the Conservation and Survey Division of the University of Nebraska School of Natural Resources.

--Lyndon Vogt, general manager of the Upper Niobrara-White Natural Resources District based in Chadron

A couple of farmer/ranchers from the area, including Terry Terrell of Hay Springs, also will be panel members, according to Loree MacNeill, director of cultural programs and college relations at CSC.

Dr. Mike Leite, associate professor of earth science at Chadron State, will be the moderator.

MacNeill said the college devoted its Distinguished Speakers Series to water because of its importance to the region's economy and the concerns the current drought has caused.

She noted that the panel members are involved with water issues on a daily basis. Members of the audience will be encouraged to ask questions and discuss their experiences and observations, too, MacNeill said.
