Chadron State College’s student newspaper, The Eagle, earned second place for general excellence among the state’s college news publications during the annual Nebraska Press Association convention Saturday, April 23. In addition, the Eagle won three individual third-place awards.

One went to Heather Beebout of Whitman, the newspaper’s editor, and page editor Eric Lubbers of Yuma, Colo., for a news series about influenza vaccinations. Third for sports photography went to news editor Laura Phagan of Gillette, Wyo., for a rugby photograph. In addition, ad manager Billie O’Bryan of Hot Springs, S.D., had the third best single advertising idea, which was designed for a Chadron bar.

Beebout, Lubbers and Phagan are each seniors and O’Bryan is a sophomore.

This is the second consecutive year that the Eagle, which is advised by Chadron State instructor LaVida Dickinson, has placed in the top three for general excellence.

The Creightonian of Creighton University was awarded first place in the category while the Antelope of the University of Nebraska at Kearney was third.
