Nebraskaland writers' are topic of CSC course
Students will have the opportunity to learn there’s more to Nebraska than a football team and cornfields this summer in the Nebraskaland Writers course.
The online course, taught by Dr. Matthew Evertson, Chadron State College language and literature professor, will introduce students to some of the many talented writers from the Nebraska and High Plains region and will satisfy the literature aspect of the general studies requirement at CSC.
This is the first time the introductory literature class has had a special section, said Evertson. He hopes to provide participants with both an introduction to literary works, and a general requirements course that they can feel connected to.
“Literature is a humanistic activity. I want students to learn that it’s more about the effect the piece has on the reader than on specific dates,” said Evertson.
The books that will be studied include those from authors Willa Cather, Mari Sandoz, Wright Morris, Weldon Kees, Ted Kooser, Loren Eiseley and John Neihardt.
“Eight books are required for the class, which sounds like a lot, but it’s actually not any more pages than a normal requirement,” said Evertson “Plus, it’s a good way for students to build up a library.”
The course is one of many CSC summer courses that will begin Tuesday, July 5. It hasn’t been decided whether it will be offered regularly during the school year.
