'Native American Games' featured at Sandoz Center

“Native American Games,” a multi-disciplinary exhibit involving sports, history and American Indian culture is now on display at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center at Chadron State College.

The exhibit, which features game equipment, photographs and video, represents the activities of more than 40 tribes. A number of unique games are featured, including stickball and lacrosse, historically two of the most popular American Indian pastimes.

“This exhibit is historically significant because stickball was outlawed in Mississippi and discouraged in Oklahoma to prevent tribes from congregating in groups,” says Peter Tirrell, associate director of the Oklahoma Museum of Natural History.

“Native American Games” is sponsored by the Okalahoma Museum of Natural History and the Muscogee Creek Nation.

A cooperative project of the Oklahoma Humanities Council and the Oklahoma Museum of History, the touring exhibit has received funding from fast-food chain Sonic and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The exhibit will be shown through Jan. 26, 2006. The Sandoz Center is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. It is closed from noon to 1 p.m. each day.
