My Antonia' teleconference set
“My Antonia,” the Willa Cather novel published in 1918, will be the subject a video conference that will be shown in the Kosman Teleconference Room of the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center at Chadron State College beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, April 8. The public is welcome to participate.
The teleconference, which will originate from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, is the first One Book/One State project in Nebraska.
Dr. Matt Evertson, assistant professor of language and literature at CSC, said “My Antonia” is an excellent choice for the first state reading project. The novel is so highly regarded that it was chosen by the city of Chicago in 2002 for its One Book/One City project. In addition, Evertson pointed out that it is “a Nebraska book by a Nebraska author.”
The book details the history of homesteading and the making of a community in Nebraska. It also transcends Nebraska to become a story of the development of communities all across America, making it is a book that citizens throughout the nation cherish.
“It truly is a book that all Nebraskans should read, discuss in community settings, and enjoy,” Evertson said. “This novel employs the art of storytelling and the stories are about us; these stories provide a glimpse into our past and are guideposts to our future.”
Students in Evertson’s class have read the book and plan to participate in the discussion. He may be contacted for more details at mevertson@csc.edu.
