Journalism students win Golden Leaf awards
Chadron State College’s student newspaper, The Eagle, won 12 Golden Leaf awards in the Nebraska Collegiate Media Association’s annual competition this spring.
Sophomore Daniel Binkard of Ponca, a graphics editor for the newspaper, was a triple winner. He won firsts for sports photograph, news photograph and photo essay. Editor Heather Beebout of Whitman and page editor Alex Helmbrecht of McCook, both seniors who graduated this spring, teamed up to win the best review category. The Eagle’s other first place entry was an advertisement created by sophomore Billie O’Bryan of Hot Springs, S.D.
The Eagle, which is advised by instructor LaVida Dickinson, earned honorable mention for overall excellence.

Third Place:
Aaron Beyer, Sidney, junior, cartoon/editorial cartoon; Elizabeth Thies, Hay Springs, senior, advertisement.
Honorable mention:
Beebout, news photograph; Eric J. Lubbers, Yuma, Colo., senior, headline writing.
