Jazz concert at CSC is Thursday night
The final concert of the school year at Chadron State College will be Thursday, April 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall. It will feature the instrumental jazz ensemble directed by Dr. Sandy Schaefer and the vocal jazz ensemble directed by Dr. Joel Schreuder. Several of the numbers were performed by the CSC groups last week at the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Festival in Greeley.
The instrumental portion of the program will spotlight the saxophone section in "Four Brothers" "Shake Your Bones" "Groove Merchant" and "Crazeology:"
Schaefer said, "This is the best sax section I ever had. It’s been great having them this semester.”
“Four Brothers” was made famous by the Woody Herman Band in 1947. That band was unusual because it had three tenor saxes instead of the usual two. The CSC version will feature Jolana Milburn of Rushville on lead tenor, John DeWitt of Chadron on second tenor, Miki Myers of Sundance, Wyo., on third tenor and Nick Highland of Hershey on baritone sax.
"Groove Merchant" was made famous by the Thad Jones and Mel Lewis Orchestra in 1970 and will feature Alessa Hebbert of Gering on soprano sax.
Schaefer said Hebbert, Myers and Highland are freshmen who add much to the band.
Also on the program is the historic song, "Boplicity," from Miles Davis' “Birth of The Cool” sessions. Schaefer said these recordings ushered in a new, less aggressive, style of jazz. The tune will feature Alex Jones of Alliance on trumpet and Highland on baritone sax.
The vocal portion of the program will include numerous long-time favorites.
Milburn will be the soloist for “This Can't Be Love!,” Shana Gulbranson of Chadron will be the soloist on the great Tony Bennett hit, “I Left My Heart In San Francisco,” and Karin Keller of Chadron will be featured on “The Night We Called It a Day.”
Also on the program will be “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter,” the Beach Boys hit “God Only Knows” and the Duke Ellington number, “It Don’t Mean a Thing.”
The vocal ensemble also will improvise on two numbers, “Stolen Moments” and “Freddie Freeloader.”
Advance tickets may be obtained through the Memorial Hall box office at 432-6360. They are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and youths under 18. All tickets at the door will be $6.
