Jazz Birds have new tunes

The Jazz Birds from Chadron State College will be presenting several new arrangements when it performs at the Olde Main Street Inn in downtown Chadron, starting at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 24.

“Blue Rondo ala Turk” made famous by the Dave Brubeck Quartet will feature Johannah Hardy of Chadron on the saxophone; “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” made famous by Gladys Knight will be sung by Jolana Milburn of Rushville; and “Ooo Baby, Baby” by Smokey Robinson will be sung by Mandy Carlson of Hay Springs.

Milburn also will be featured on the flute and tenor sax on three tunes that the Jazz Birds’ director, Dr. Sandy Schaefer, recently arranged for her. The numbers are “Mr. Magic” by Grover Washington, “Sugar” by Stanley Turntine and “Serenade to a Cockoo” by Roland Kirk.

The performances at Old Main Street are open to the public without charge.
