High Plains Jazz Festival is Thursday

Musicians from nine Nebraska and Wyoming high schools will be at Chadron State on Thursday, March 31 for the annual High Plains Jazz Festival.

Schools participating in the vocal portion of the program, which will be in the Student Center, are Alliance, Chadron, Hemingford and Scottsbluff from Nebraska and Guernsey-Sunrise and Sundance from Wyoming.

Taking part in the instrumental performances in Memorial Hall will be Bridgeport, Gering, Gordon, Hershey and Sundance.

A concert by the CSC vocal jazz choir will be at 1 p.m. in the Student Center while a concert by the CSC instrumental jazz ensemble will be at 3:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall, followed by the awards ceremonies.

The vocal adjudicator will be Rita Stinner, director of choral activities at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff.

The instrumental adjudicator will be Mike Tomaro, who teaches at Carnegie-Mellon University and also is a composer, arranger and saxophonist. He has performed with Ray Charles, Terence Blanchard, the Dizzy Gillespie tribute band and Woody Herman.

Tomaro will give a clinic that will be open to the public at 11 a.m. in Memorial Hall.

8:45 a.m.—*Sundance, 9:10—*Guernsey-Sunrise, 9:35—Chadron, 10—Hemingford, 10:40---Sundance, 11:05—Alliance #1, 11:30—Alliance #2.

1:45 p.m.—Scottsbluff #1, 2:10—Scottsbluff #2, 2:35—Scottsbluff #3.

*Jazz choirs. All other swing choirs.

 

Instrumental performance schedule:

8:45 a.m.—Gordon, 9:10---Bridgeport, 9:35—Gordon, 10—Hershey, 10:25—Gering.

1:55 p.m.—Sundance, 2:20—Gering, 2:45—Sundance.
