Chadron State College is among the institutions that will link with Florida State University to begin offering a Master of Social Work Degree in the Midwest, where a special need for social workers has been identified. Chadron State’s first courses in the program will be offered online in the fall of 2005.

A grant that Florida State received from the U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education is helping support the collaborative effort in rural areas. FSU has one of the top-ranked social work programs in the nation and will provide the instructional leadership. The credit will come from FSU.

Deborah Stewart, the social work program’s field director at Chadron State, said the program will be open to those who hold a bachelor’s degree in social work. By taking two courses a semester and completing an internship, a master’s degree can be obtained in approximately 2 1/2 years, she said.

“We are delighted to be adding this program,” said Stewart. “There is an acute shortage of social workers with advanced training in western Nebraska and southwestern South Dakota, including the Black Hills and Pine Ridge Reservation. The program is designed to accommodate working professionals. They can continue in their jobs and work on the courses at home when it is convenient for them.”

Stewart added that Chadron State is seeking field instructors who can assist college personnel in supervising candidates for social work degrees during their practicum experiences. Field instructor requirements include a bachelor’s degree in social work and two years of experience or a master’s degree in social work.

Inquiries for both the master’s degree program and the potential for serving as a field instructor may be directed to Stewart at 308-432-6333 or by e-mail at dstewart@pipeline.csc.edu.
