A Chadron State College assistant economics professor, Dr. Thomas Swanke, has had a paper published in a new book titled “Contemporary Post Keynesian Analysis.”

Swanke’s paper is presented as a chapter of the 368-page hardcover book. In the book, Swanke writes that society has the largest role in making money a valid tool in trade. Unlike some economists, he says the Federal Reserve, chaired by Alan Greenspan, is more of a reactive player in the economy than proactive.

“We create money,” Swanke said. “We create money because we believe it works.”

The paper results from Swanke’s doctoral dissertation, which was presented in 2002 at the seventh International Post Keynesian Workshop in Kansas City, Mo. Swanke submitted the paper for the book, which was edited by fellow economists L. Randall Wray and Mathew Forstater, that year.

Post-Keynesian economics is a school of thought which is based on the ideas of John Maynard Keynes. Keynes, who died in 1946, was an English economist whose ideas had a major impact on modern economic and political thought.

In addition to teaching, Swanke writes a column about economics for the Chadron Record.
