Earth Day celebration set

Chadron State College’s Geoscience Club will host an Earth Day celebration Sunday April 24. The celebration, which will be free and open to the public, will be from noon to 5 p.m. at the area between the Student Center and Math and Science Building.

Chadron State student Josh Balmat, the club’s vice president, said games are planned and refreshments will be sold. He said speakers will represent a number of area organizations that deal with the environment, including the Natural Resources District, Natural Resources Conservation Services, Solid Waste Agency of Northwest Nebraska, Keep Chadron Beautiful, Keep Alliance Beautiful and the United States Department of Agriculture. In addition, Elmo Eagle, the CSC mascot, plans to make an appearance.

Earth Day, which as initiated by U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, began in 1970 as a way to bring awareness to the planet’s environmental concerns. The holiday, which is April 22 this year, is celebrated throughout the world.
