Culinary historian to speak at CSC

A well-known food writer, lecturer and culinary historian, Mary Gunderson of Yankton, S.D., will speak at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7 in the Student Center at Chadron State College. No admission will be charged.
Gunderson’s acclaim has increased the past year or so following the publication of her book, “The Food Journal of Lewis and Clark: Recipes for an Expedition.” Honors won by the book include Best of Show and Best Cookbook in the 2004 Midwest Book Awards competition. The book also was a 2004 gold medal winner from the Ben Franklin Awards for best first book, non-fiction.
The speaker is a graduate of Iowa State University, where she majored in journalism with emphasis in food and nutrition. Her consulting clients have included General Mills, Pillsbury, Farm Journal magazine, Land O Lakes and the Meredith Corporation. She has been the food editor for Better Homes and Gardens magazine.
During her presentation, Gunderson will prepare some of the foods that those on the Lewis and Clark expedition consumed. Those in the audience will have a chance to taste the delicacies.
“I try to bring American history alive through cooking for kids and grownups who like their history in small bites,” she noted.
She also has written several children’s books pertaining to food, including “Cooking on the Lewis and Clark Expedition.”
She is being sponsored by the NebKota Reading Council and Chadron State College. She will have copies of her books for sale.
