CSC to host World Food Day Teleconference

The Department of Business and Economics at Chadron State College and the Nebraska Council on Economic Education will host the 22nd annual World Food Day Teleconference on Friday, Oct. 14 in the Student Center Ballroom at CSC. The program, which will be open to the public without charge, will begin at 9:45 a.m. with a welcome by Dr. Janie Park, president of Chadron State. The teleconference theme is “Reflections on Fighting Hunger: Roads Not Taken, Goals Not Met, the Journey Ahead.” The program

Lappe’ is the author of “Diet for a Small Planet,” a book that has sold in the millions worldwide since its first printing in 1971. She also has written more than a dozen other books.

Dr. Pedro Sanchez, a World Food Prize laureate and winner of a MacArthur Foundation’s “Genius” award will also be on the program. He serves as co-chair of a United Nations task force that recently issued a major report on world hunger.

In addition, there will be taped cameo commentaries by UN Ambassador Tony Hall and Dr. Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. A special documentary film, “Silent Killer,” produced by John de Graaf and Hana Jindrova, will be shown in the second hour. The third hour will be an interactive question and answer period.

Patricia Young coordinator of the U.S. World Food Day Committee, said: “Hurricane Katrina has provided a stark picture of what happens when hunger and poverty are ignored. Hunger around the world and hunger at home demand urgent action. We have the know-how and the money, but do we have the political will to act?” asks
