CSC to host education conferences

Chadron State College will be hosting two education conferences focusing on diversity in mid-October. Nebraska Commissioner of Education Doug Christensen will be present for both events.

The first will be largely for Chadron State students who are preparing to teach. It is entitled Western Diversity and Excellence in Education Conference, and will be Wednesday, Oct. 12 in the Student Center.

Speakers will include Jessie Myles, multicultural and urban education director for the Nebraska Department of Education. He will speak at 9:15 on “Poverty and Education.”

Also on the morning agenda will be “A Conversation with the Commissioner” in which students will have the opportunity to ask questions and express their thoughts to Christensen.

Another presenter will be Paul Gorski of Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. He will discuss “Working with Diverse Students in the Classroom” at the first session in the afternoon.

The second conference will be open to area teachers and administrators. It will be on Thursday, Oct. 13. The keynote speaker will be Spence Rogers, director of PEAK Learning Systems and twice the winner of Arizona’s Excellence in Teaching Award.

He will speak at 9 a.m.

The luncheon speaker will be Dr. Marshall Hill, who will discuss the latest information on challenges and opportunities confronting American Indian students in Nebraska.

Gorski is also on the Thursday program.
