CSC to graduate 182 Friday evening
A total of 182 degrees will be conferred Friday, Dec. 16 during commencement exercises at Chadron State College. The ceremonies will begin at 5 p.m. in the Armstrong Building.
The candidates include 24 who will receive graduate degrees and 56 who completed work on their degrees this past summer and have been invited to participate in commencement.
The speaker will be Dr. Pat Colgate, a faculty member and administrator at Chadron State for 37 years. During that tenure, his duties included serving as a physical education professor, coach, athletic director, department chairman and dean. He is often credited with helping enhance Chadron State’s reputation as an excellent teacher training institution.
Colgate came to the college in 1965 and four years later was named chairman of the Department of Physical Education. In 1987, he was promoted to dean of the School of Education and Physical Education. He continued in that position when the school was renamed Education and Graduate Studies in 1993 until his retirement in 2002.
One of the highlights of his career was helping plan, promote and design the Nelson Physical Activity Center at CSC. He was involved in the project for more than a decade before funding was finally approved in 1885 and the building opened in 1987.
Colgate also was the speaker at the graduate degree commencement at CSC in May 2002. He said he has prepared an entirely new speech for this year’s ceremonies.
A member of the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State Colleges, Larry Teahon of Chadron, also will congratulate the graduates early in the ceremonies.
